West District Sprints - September 2022, Tollcross

I feel like I am saying this about many meets we are swimming at but it was great to be back! WD Sprints has always been a great curtain raiser for the season, a great opportunity to shake off the racing rust and we certainly did that. We will certainly get better at racing through the season, but the team battled hard throughout the whole weekend and we came away with 3 golds, 6 silvers, 6 bronze medals and a further 26 final places.

Swimmer of the weekend was Eilidh who came away with 2 National Short Course Consideration times in the 50br (1sec PB) and the 100im (4sec PB). While she seemed to narrowly miss out on the medals her swims deserved, she raced hard and swam with confidence in every race she did.

Our District Champions were Calum winning a close 50bc in a new pb, he seemed to involved in tight finishes throughout the weekend narrowly missing out on winning the 50br and 50fc. Emily also won a tight final on the 50fly, holding her form right to the finish to hold off her competition, a nice return to form for Emily on her favoured Butterfly events and Katie, who is still fairly new to the club since moving from Kirkintilloch in April won her signature event the 50br by an impressive 1.5sec in a new PB.

Silvers (6): Calum 50br 50fc 100im; Grace 50fc; Chloe 100im & boys 13-15yrs Med Team (Ruairidh, Calum, Fraser, Ben)

Bronze (6): Chloe 50fc 50bc; Ben 50fc; Grace 50bc; Girls 13-15yrs FC team (Eilidh, Joanna, Chloe, Grace); Boys 13-15yrs FC Team (Ben, Calum, Fraser, Ruairidh)

There were a few 'if only' swims that we wish we had a do-over for. We had 6 people finish in 4th place and a few more in tight finishes just missing out on medals. As the season progresses and our skills get sharper we are confident these tight finishes will go our way.

Finalists (26):Eilidh 50br 100im 50bc; Ben 50fly 50br 100im; Izzi 50br 50fc; Chloe 50fly 50br; Calum 50fly; Orla 50br; Joanna 50br; Rose 50br 50fc 50bc; Grace 50fly 100im; Eilidh 50br 50fly; Fraser 50fly 100im; Emily 50bc 100im; Ruairidh 50bc; Girls 13-15 Girls B Team (Abi, Emily, Iona, Rose)

Once again it was nice to see so many M&B parents helping out at different parts of the meet. The marshals kept me honest reminding me to send the swimmers up for their races, Wendy on the Mic commentating on the races was a familiar voice, John working the computer system ready for the same system to be built into our new pool and the many timekeepers/ officials on poolside certainly made it feel like we were in a friendly environment. Like everything we would still like more parents getting involved (and a few more junior swimmers entering would have been good) but we are very grateful to those that do get involved.
